The coastline of Prince Edward Island consists of a beautiful combination of dunes, long isolated beaches, red sandstone cliffs, salt water marshes and a number of bays and harbours. These beaches, sandstone cliffs, and dunes are mainly made of sedimentary rocks. They have turned red in colour due to the presence of a material with high iron concentration among them which has oxidized due to the exposure to the moisture in the air.
